Applied Science

Applied Science is the body of knowledge that is mainly concerned with the applications of observed or demonstrated truths to solve practical problems.

Science is a dynamic process by which we continually refine our understanding of the natural world and universe.  The goal of the Yorkville High School Applied Science Division is to foster student growth as science-literate citizens able to critically analyze scientific research and data to reach educated decisions in this complex technological society. We believe that our students need to acquire scientific reasoning and thinking skills in order to understand science-related issues and apply science to their daily lives.

The applied science curriculum is based on national and state standards and designed to meet our divisional goals.  The curriculum offers a diverse course of study in all major disciplines of science. Students must take two credits of science to meet graduation requirements. Biology is required, and the next sequential course or chosen elective. It is important for students to properly prepare for additional elective science courses by successfully completing freshman and sophomore level coursework before enrolling in more challenging courses. Successful completion of the introductory courses with a C or better is recommended for most science electives. Because colleges expect students to have a comprehensive background in all areas of study, we offer a variety of elective courses in the earth, physical, and life science realm. We also offer additional electives in the areas of: food science, fashion and interior design, parenting and child development. Students who plan to pursue applied science related courses of study and applied science related careers should plan wisely to make the most of the opportunities available to them.

Honors and advanced level courses are taught at an accelerated pace and require a strong work ethic, deep interest in the subject matter, and a high level of responsibility.

In addition to traditional required and elective science offerings, Applied Science offers Family and Consumer Science offerings.  Family and Consumer Science courses are elective courses open to students during all four years of high school. FACS courses provide a method by which students can discover their potential role in the vocational world. FACS also contributes to the development of personal goals and interests such as:  hobbies, leisure activities, and general education curriculum decisions. Level 1 courses provide orientation and fundamental exposure to skill development and/or related vocational processes. Level 2 courses provide for greater depth of knowledge and skill development.
